Upgraded Suspension Key for UTV-Mounted Fire Skids

When adding a UTV-mounted skid to your equipment, an upgraded suspension isn't just an option—it’s essential. Unless you have a Polaris XD 1500, straight off the production line, UTVs are built for comfort, not heavy payloads. A fully loaded skid, especially when wet, can weigh as much as one or two crew members. Without proper suspension, that extra weight can affect the vehicle’s performance.

Weight Distribution

A stiffer suspension helps ensure the vehicle stays balanced on uneven terrain, as well as reduces rear-suspension “squat”. This helps when steering and braking, and improves off-road performance considerably. A lightly-suspended UTV, even if it doesn’t lift its front end, will struggle to navigate rough ground effectively. Soft springs mean the shock will bottom out easier, and if either end of the UTV starts bouncing or oscillating, that requires the driver to slow down. A stiffer spring keeps the vehicle’s attitude level, and combined with slower rebound and compression damping means that in general the suspension is going to stay much more composed.

The risks of overloading side-by-sides are well known—seen firsthand and often replayed in cautionary videos. But the stakes are much higher during emergency calls. Skipping suspension upgrades and loading the bed to its capacity can lead to a side-by-side that simply doesn’t handle the way it should.

Extending Vehicle Lifespan and Cutting Costs

Upgraded suspension systems also protect the long-term health of your UTV by reducing stress on the chassis and minimizing wear on suspension components. With proper springs, you’ll help minimize premature wear on components that are being over-stressed, keeping the vehicle in service longer.

When repurposing UTVs for firefighting, look for high-performance springs or complete shock replacements designed for off-road use. Brands like Fox, King, and Elka are known for producing durable systems suited to the demands of emergency response vehicles, and most OEMs also offer suspension upgrade packages.

Planning ahead with a suspension upgrade ensures a UTV can handle your emergency response calls safely and effectively.
